This packet helps students practice adding and subtracting with positive and negative numbers (a skill that is essential for algebra and is very often challenging for students). This worksheet focuses just on numbers between -10 and 10 so students do not have to do long or complicated addition or subtraction problems; they just need to accurately add and subtract integers. Each page also has a race formula to easily calculate scores. The student has a set time limit to finish all of the problems. Whatever problems are incorrect or blank after the time period are added together. That score is subtracted from 100 to get a final score. Students can then compare their scores to see who did the best. We push students to finish them quickly, and make them repeat worksheets until they can do them with 100% accuracy. We find that the vast majority of mistakes that even high school students make in algebra stem from problems adding and subtracting with integers. These sprints are a fun way to tell whether students have mastered adding and subtracting with integers.
Find the sum or difference.
Simple: 8 + 4 = (+ plus +) OR -6 + -8 = (- plus -) OR 10 - 3 = (+ minus +) OR -5 - 4 = (- minus -)
Advanced: 6 + -3= (+ plus -) OR -5 + 3 = (- plus +) OR 7 - -9 = (+ minus -) OR -8 - -7 = (- minus -)
We encourage all students to have a full understanding of how negative numbers work before attempting these drills. We also encourage all students entering algebra to be able to complete these drills with 100% accuracy, in less than 5 minutes per page.
