Claudine Phillips is EdBoost's President. Claudine earned her B.A. in environmental studies from UC Santa Barbara. Claudine is currently teaches third grade at Roscoare Elementary school. Previously, Claudine was a Literacy Coach in Los Angeles Unified and she taught 5th grade, 4th grade, and kindergarten at Castle Heights Elementary. Claudine has earned the prestigious National Board Certification as well as a CLAD certification (for teaching English language learners). At Castle Heights, she has served as a standards-based coordinator, professional development coordinator, science department chair, guest speaker at Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment program (BTSA) functions, and master/mentor teacher. As the science department chair, she coordinates Castle Heights’s annual science fair and works with administrators, teachers, parents, and students to create a hands-on science curriculum that corresponds with national, state, and district standards. Claudine also participates in a Target Science Leadership team, a network of educators and scientists who meet regularly to develop science standards and activities. After college, Claudine taught marine biology to kindergarteners in the Goleta School District and biology, algebra, world history, and English to severely emotionally disturbed (SED) high school students at New Directions in North Hills. Alisa Anderson is EdBoost's treasurer. Alisa earned her B.A. in business economics from UCLA. She then worked as an auditor for Deloite and Touche for two years. Before reducing her hours to care for her young sons, Alisa was the Director of Financial Services at Puretek Corporation in San Fernando. Daniel Culbert earned his B.S. in Computer Systems Engineering, Tau Beta Pi, and his M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford. He has over 10 years experience as an architect, manager, and entrepreneur in leading-edge technologies and markets, working in the areas of consumer electronics, operating systems, multimedia hardware and software, internet search design, and audio recognition. Recently, he helped the Shazam, a UK company, launch their mobile audio recognition service in the UK. He founded everSearch (CTO, board member), an internet search/infrastructure company. Prior to that, he spent several years overseeing the development of real-time operating systems, dynamic resource management systems, and multimedia hardware and software architecture at Chromatic Research, a company devoted to creating a high-bandwidth, high-powered single-chip mediaprocessor designed to process all graphics, audio, video, and communications on a PC. He has also designed and developed several audio and speech projects for mobile systems at Apple Computer. Cynthia Feliciano earned her B.A. in political science and sociology, magna cum laude, from Boston University and her Ph.D. in sociology from UCLA. Cynthia is currently an assistant professor of sociology at UC Irvine. Cynthia's research has been supported by a number of prestigious grants including dissertation fellowships from the Ford Foundation, the Russell Sage Foundation, and UCLA's Graduate Division and a UC President's Postdoctoral fellowship. At UCLA Cynthia worked as a teaching assistant for undergraduate students in both the sociology department and in the department of women's studies. She also volunteered in a tutoring program for youth on early release from lock-up and at an elementary school. Cynthia has published several articles and book chapters on Asian and Latino immigrants, immigrant culture, and education. Bianca Haywood is a 12th grader at Hamilton High School and an EdBoost student. Bianca's favorite subject is science. When she grows up she would like to go to UCLA or USC and be a track star like her role model, Gail Devers. Because many of her friends ask her for advice, she also thinks that she might like to be a psychologist. Bianca has won a number of awards, including "Student of the Month" and "Student of the Week" certificates at Castle Heights Elementary School and awards for running, softball, basketball, best comedian, and most stylish. Megan P. Hall earned her B.S. in Biological Sciences, cum laude, from the University of California, Santa Barbara and her Ph.D. in Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics from UCLA. Megan completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Biological Sciences at the University at Buffalo and completed a second postdoctoral fellowship at UC Santa Cruz. She is currently the managing editor of PLOS Biology, an online science journal. As an undergraduate she won a prestigious Howard Hughes Undergraduate Research Fellowship. Megan has worked as a teaching assistant for the undergraduate microbiology laboratory class at UCLA, has served as a mentor for women in the sciences, and worked as the "Science Columnist" for the Daily Bruin. Megan has also worked as a private tutor, specializing in high school science and SAT preparation. Megan is also well-known at La Madera Elementary School in Lake Forest where she gives annual science demonstrations in her mother's 5th grade classroom. Andy Liu graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, with honors in American History, from Brown University and received his master's degree in architecture from Harvard University. Andy worked as an architect at Frank Gehry Associates and is currently the head architect at 10-19 Achitecture. During college, Andy served as a teaching assistant in the Art Department at Brown. He also spent several summers teaching and serving as dean of faculty at SummerBridge, an educational enrichment program designed to prepare high-achieving, urban middle school students for competitive high schools. After college, Andy taught American History to 8th and 11th graders at the Francis Parker School in Chicago. Adam Miller earned an A.B., with honors, in sociology from Stanford Universit, a Master's degree in sociology from UCLA, and an MBA from the Marshall School of Business at USC. Adam is currently the Director of Finance for the California Charter Schools Association. Adam brings higher education, education industry, and start-up experience to EdBoost's board. He was the Executive Director of the University of California Student Association (UCSA). Adam also served as the Director of Graduate Programs for The Princeton Review's San Francisco Peninsula region, where he developed and taught test preparation classes and developed test preparation curricula. Prior to that, he was the co-founder and Director of Operations for an Internet technology start-up. Sue Shultz has a B.A. in Education with minors in English and Social Studies from College of Our Lady of Mercy. She retired last year from Castle Heights Elementary School, after a distinguished 40-year teaching career. She has received a PTA "Teacher of the Year" award and has received appreciation awards for dedicated service from the Friends of Castle Heights, The Los Angeles Board of Education, and the City of Los Angeles. Sue began teaching in the Catholic school system, teaching at Holy Name School and St. Stephen's in San Francisco, St. Bruno's School in Whittier, and St. Francis X. Cabrini here in Los Angeles. Before joining the Los Angeles Unified School District, Sue taught overseas in a U.S. Department of Defense School in Karlsruhe, Germany. Within L.A. Unified, Sue was a valued teacher at Angeles Mesa Elementary and 54th Street Elementary before joining the Castle Heights team in 1980. Frequently remembered by her alumni as "my favorite teacher ever," Sue brings a wide range of teaching expertise to the EdBoost board. In her many years of teaching, Sue has also accrued considerable experience in educational leadership, administration, and curricular planning. She was elected Castle Heights Faculty chairperson, was the 4th grade grade-level chair for several years, and served as Library chairperson, P.E. chairperson, and grade-level representative to local Governance Councils and Site Councils. Sue has also worked as Student Council moderator, Audio-Visual Specialist, and served on the Castle Heights Budget and School Site Plan committees. Finally, Sue has spent several years on Language Arts committees and has served as a Reading Coordinator (selecting the school-wide reading curriculum). |
Alison Chiang: Alison received her undergraduate degree from MIT and is currently a in the Masters of Public Health Program at UCLA. Alison specializes in math, science, and test preparation tutoring. Allison Clement: Allison graduated from UCLA in 2008. She specializes in math and test preparation tutoring. Brittany Ramos: Brittany is an undergraduate at Loyola Marymount University, majoring in business. Brittany specializes in tutoring reading, writing, and math and especially enjoys working with our younger students. Erin Moore: Erin graduated from UCLA in 2009, with majors in English and French. Erin is also an accomplished actress with several credits (including: Midsummer Night's Dream) to her name. Erin does a wide range of tutoring, but specializes in test preparation. Lauren Lok: Lauren is an undergraduate at UCLA. She does a wide range of tutoring at EdBoost, including Algebra, CAHSEE prep, and reading. Nina Abonal: Nina is an undergraduate student at Loyola Marymount University, studying education and preparing to be a teacher. Nina does a wide range of tutoring, but specializes in language arts and writing.
